ISIS Appeal, Diplomats’ Challenges and the ‘Top 5′(50:34)
|
The arrest of Israeli Bedouin teachers for inciting students to support ISIS brings VOI’s Daniel Seaman and Daniela Traub to discuss what is behind the phenomenon. Also, with increasing ISIS attacks on countries bordering Israel, they weigh in on whether Israel should initiate an assault on ISIS while it is weak, or keep out of the Arab in-fighting.
Then, Daniel and Daniela initiate a new feature, in which they list their “top fives.” This week: The top 5 reasons for people to visit Israel. Hear what they think and share your thoughts with them.
Next, Daniel and Daniela are joined in-studio by recently retired Israeli diplomat Ehud Gol, best-selling author of Profession: Ambassador. The 50-year Foreign Ministry veteran, who served as ambassador to Spain, Italy and Portugal, with tours in the US and Brazil, talks about what makes Israel’s diplomatic corps so unique. He says Israel is truly “alone among the nations;” recounts historic moments and humorous incidents; recalls how a diplomatic insult was transformed into a victory; and describes being brought to tears when he presented his credentials to the King of Spain, exactly 500 years after the edict of the expulsion of the Jews was decreed at the same location.
Finally, Daniel and Daniela are joined in-studio by Laura Kam, president of Kam Global Strategies, who was fixed up with her Israeli diplomat husband by then Israeli ambassador to the UN Benjamin Netanyahu. She talks about how answering an ad for a job at the Israeli Consulate in NYC in the early 1980’s paved the way for her current career; how her outspokenness has affected her duties as a diplomat’s wife; and how none of it prepared her for the most difficult role of all — the mother of IDF combat soldiers.
