VOI’s Molly Livingstone is joined in-studio by Sarah Spielman, who shares her journey from being a budding opera singer in London to Orthodox Judaism and immigration to Israel. The granddaughter of the founder of the London Jewish Male Choir (and an Israeli mother and British father who met through their own musical pursuits), Sarah gave up her career to adhere to “kol isha,” a religious decree determining that a woman’s singing voice may not be heard by men. She then shifted gears, performing only for women, setting the Psalms to music by Schubert and Schumann and teaching voice. Tune in to hear her sing the Passover song she composed, “Close Every Door.”
