The Jerusalem Food Coop: Bringing Community to Your Shopping Experience
The high cost of living in Israel spurred a group of Hebrew University students to take action.
B’Shutaf: Jerusalem Food Coop (the Hebrew name is taken from the children’s expression for doing something jointly), was born to bypass high prices at supermarkets, and keep young people from fleeing the city.
VOI’s Molly Livingstone is joined in-studio by Dan Kessler, the manager and only paid employee of the Coop, to discuss its goal; how it works with volunteers and memberships; and the communal experience involved. Molly also spends an evening in the store itself, talking to shoppers and feeling the atmosphere first-hand.
