Purim Politics: A.B. Yehoshua on the Meaning of Zionism
5 March 2023Israel Prize-winning novelist, essayist and playwright A.B. Yehoshua ("Buli")-- author, most recently, of "Ahizat Moledet" (Homeland Lesson) -- was called the "Israeli Faulkner" by the New York Times. A left-wing intellectual, he has recently called on Europe to recognize Palestine as a independent state. He joins VOI's Yishai Fleisher to talk about the meaning of Zionism, and give literary depth to the Scroll of Esther.
Then, Knesset Insider Jeremy Saltan joins Yishai in-studio to dissect the politics behind the Purim story. Why did the king never leave the palace? Why was Haman so thin-skinned? How did the politically sharp Esther out-maneuver Haman's advisers and create an inner political circle that enabled her to accuse Haman, right to his face?
